The Cosmic Christ
King of the Universe
Key Facts and Ideas
In the page on the Divine Image we noted that:-
"This is why there must be a New Adam for a New Creation, Christ ... a Cosmic Christ, a Suffering Servant who will rise from death to destroy the destructive wall of division that we have erected between ourselves and God. With our freedom in the resurrection will come freedom for all creation."
In purpose built Orthodox churches one always finds a fresco in paint or mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, Christ the Ruler of All, on the dome embracing the nave. Here in the Church is a representation of the Cosmos itself with Christ as its King and Restorer. All the believers in Him now realise their vocations as priests of a New Creation and in that priesthood they themselves, bearing the Holy Spirit from on high, are divinised according to their God given human potential. All this has been made possible by Him who being the fullness of all fills and restores all things in Himself. As the Holy Apostle St. Paul has written in his letter to the Church at Ephesus concerning this Christ:-
15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. [Ephesians 1:15-23].
Some people want to domesticate Jesus, render Him on a much smaller canvas, a good man or a prophet perhaps. This is up to them but it's not Christianity. The Church receives Christ as she has always received Him, as Lord and Saviour and the first fruits of a New Creation ... the Kingdom of God not the Kingdom of Man. Christ's rule belongs to a completely different order than any human political system or ideology. Christ's kingship and rule is that of infinite Love; God's true nature and ours ... in the flesh.
Christ is the human face of God. He is the Cosmic King who restores humanity to God and renews the face of Creation. He is risen and victorious over death. Faith, hope and love now rule again in the Universe because of Him.
As Jesus said to his disciples:- "but who do you say that I am?" [Mark 8:29] How do I answer this question?
